Inspired by ancient Persia
This Persian pictorial rug shows a royal scene inspired by ancient Persia, like the palaces of Persepolis. The king sits on his throne, surrounded by his court, dealing with an important problem — a betrayal, accusation, or serious dispute. The central Persian text announces the news, which makes the king angry. Instead of a normal decision, he turns to a sacred ritual: fire. In Zoroastrian tradition, fire represents truth and purity, showing who is honest and who is guilty. A ceremonial fire is lit by priests, and the accused or witnesses are presented before the king and the fire. The rug uses this scene symbolically — the fire reveals truth. The tall columns decorated with animals, which look like rhinoceroses, reflect the style of Persepolis and show power and strength. Smaller texts in the borders mention cities or palaces, adding to the cultural and imperial feel. Overall, the rug tells a symbolic story of royal justice, truth, and Persian heritage.
